CBD vs Medical Marijuana - Does CBD Oil Work?
In 2019, the CBD oil industry in the U.S. was valued as being worth over $270 million. It also seems like not a week goes by at present, without new stories hailing CBD oil as a cure-all for all kinds of medical conditions. If you believe the hype, CBD oil can be used to treat everything from seizures in adults to cancer and chronic arthritis. However, using CBD oil is not the same as using real cannabis as medicine.
CBD vs Medical Marijuana - The Facts
Does CBD oil work to relieve symptoms of several illnesses? The simple answer is yes.
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a compound in marijuana that is known to have medically proven therapeutic benefits. There are even FDA approved anti-epileptic medications like Epidiolex available that are derived from Cannabidiol.
How Does CBD Oil Work?
How Cannabidiol works to relieve pain and combat seizures isn’t fully understood.
What we do know is that humans and other vertebrates have what is known as an endocannabinoid system (ECS). This is a part of our nervous system that in healthy people, is regulated by lipid-based endocannabinoids in the brain.
When people use cannabis as medicine, they essentially top-up their natural endocannabinoid levels with CBD. This results in the stimulation of CB1 and CB2 endocannabinoid receptors in the brain that we know play a role in serotonin production.
CBD and Serotonin
Serotonin is often referred to as the brain’s happy chemical. This is because having more serotonin results in people feeling happier. However, having more serotonin also results in peripheral nervous system benefits.
Having more serotonin reduces anxiety.
Research suggests that serotonin plays a role in pain perception.
Serotonin plays a key role in regulating body temperature and maintaining homeostasis (balance) in the body.
Given what we know about CBD and its effect on the human endocannabinoid system, it is widely accepted that CBD does have genuine therapeutic benefits.
There is just one problem: Most CBD Oil is Derived From Hemp
In California, it is legal to use marijuana for recreational and medical purposes. However, the same isn’t true in other states. For this reason, the majority of CBD oil available online is derived from hemp, not cannabis.
Manufacturers use hemp to create CBD oil because hemp does not contain Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). (The compound responsible for the high people feel when using marijuana.)
Sadly, even though Cannabidiol can be found in hemp, the levels at which it exists are usually too low to be therapeutic.
