Dog Days of Summer: Pet CBD Is Hot, Hot, Hot

Updated: Jun 12, 2020

At Synchronicity Holistic, we love our pets and we want them to be taken care of and nurtured, especially when they aren’t feeling their best. So of course, we think it’s important to share the news that CBD is making waves in the space of treating our furry friends. CBD for pets is growing in popularity every day. We’re focused on being compassionate and caring toward our pets, which could be a reason why pet CBD is blowing up. CBD oil has shown to offer some potential therapeutic benefits for our pets, but how? Let’s dig our paws in and find out!

CBD Consumers Love Animals

It’s true that CBD consumers are more often than not pet owners! In fact, recent data shows that about 74% of people who consume CBD own pets. Even more interestingly is that the same data showed that a whopping 24% of pet owners are utilizing CBD for themselves and/or their animals.

Pet owners see promise in CBD for helping to treat their animals’ various conditions. According to AKC Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr. Jerry Klein, there has been anecdotal evidence that CBD oil may help to treat pain and control seizures in dogs. Dr. Klein noted that while there isn’t any conclusive evidence, there are also little known risks to treating pets with CBD. However, pets may experience side effects dogs such as dry mouth and drowsiness.

Peering Into the Microscope of Pet CBD Research

There isn’t a large breadth of research about how CBD oil may benefit our animals yet, but there have been some efforts to gather more data. In 2016, American Kennel Club partnered with Colorado State University to perform a small study about use of CBD in treatment of epilepsy in dogs. The study found that 89% of dogs who were treated with CBD saw a reduction in seizure activity. While not conclusive, this study still offers a hint of promise in the future of CBD.

Cornell University Hospital for Animals led a study on the efficacy of cannabidiol for osteoarthritis in dogs. In the study, each treatment lasted for four weeks with a two week washout period. The study showed promising results, demonstrating that CBD has the potential to increase comfort and activity in dogs with osteoarthritis when dosed at 2mg/kg twice daily.

Pet CBD Is Plentiful, But Buyer Beware

Like your CBD oil, pet CBD comes in a range of products such as tinctures, capsules, and chewy treats. You can also find CBD for your pets almost anywhere including from yours truly, Synchronicity Holistic. Nevertheless, it is vital to understand that not all CBD oils are alike. Since CBD does not follow the same protocols for oversight, be sure to check that the company you are supporting is keeping records on exactly what is in your pet’s CBD oil. Be sure to purchase high quality pet CBD. Aft Synchronicity, we have a wide variety of trusted vendors to ensure your furry friends are getting the high quality products they deserve. While unlikely, there is a chance that certain medications may interact with CBD, so chatting with your local vet professional before beginning a new routine may be helpful.
